170 students from the University of the South Pacific’s UU 204 class paid an educational visit to the Suva Corrections Centre to see for themselves the art being displayed at the Tagimoucia Art Gallery.
In welcoming the students and the lecturers, Director Rehabilitation for the Fiji Corrections Service, Superintendent Salote Panapasa said that it was a great privilege to host the students for the educational visit.
“We are pleased to partner with USP through this visit which we hope will become an annual one,” said Ms Panapasa.
“Through rehabilitation programs in place within the FCS, we have been able to see a lot of positive changes and our artists who are inmates, have been able to express their feelings and thoughts into paintings and drawings,” she added.
“Through the paintings and drawings, you will learn of their stories as well as their hopes and dreams for a better tomorrow.”
The students also visited the old Suva Prison building which was established in 1912.
According to Ms Jackie Leota Ete, the unit UU 204 Pacific Worlds is a compulsory subject for the students at USP.
“Its all about culture, art combined with history and other aspects that the students should know and that is why we chose to come and see for ourselves the art that is being expressed by the talented inmates,” she added.
At the end of the educational tour, the students donated about $500 towards the Tagimoucia Art Gallery which will enable the inmates to continue with their art work.
