Refresher course for 22 officers

THE first refresher course for officers of the Fiji Corrections Service was held at Naboro today.

22 participants, selected from FCS centres nationwide, attended the course that will go on for two weeks.

Assistant Commissioner (Administration) Apimeleki Taukei said the selected officers were some of those recruited into the FCS since 2013.

“The refresher course is for the officers to brush up on their skills and knowledge, general duties and the acts and regulations in place. We are also emphasising on our theme this year, Back to Basics, and encouraging the officers to go back to the basics of the job,” he said.

Mr Taukei said they also wanted to gauge how much the officers had learnt in the last two years.

“The need for training is basically capacity building for the officers and we are trying to encourage this to see how far they have gone and determine how much more we can do to take them further in their career as corrections officers.”

An additional three refresher courses have been planned for this year.

Mr Taukei said the courses were held depending on the availability of the officers so that manpower required for operations was not affected.

Three corrections officers are also part of a 6-week course that commenced at the Officers Training School in Vatuwaqa this week.

The training aims to prepare regional force officers to hold junior non-operational staff officer appointments at the rank of captain.
