Poultry

The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) poultry farming is the commercial production of poultry birds and eggs for meeting the protein needs of the general population. It’s legal mandate in line with the People’s Charter is:
• To grow sustainable commercial industry for food security while reducing imports:
• To adopt SBUs as a training ground for employment opportunities for inmates as part of their rehabilitation; and
• To ensure viable SBUs which will culminate into the formation of the Fiji Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises (FCORE).

The Poultry Small Business Unit (SBU)’s main products are eggs, chicks and poultry meat which are generated from culled birds (ie. layers and breeders) and broilers.
By-products include poultry droppings and hatchery wastes which could also provide additional income as they can be used as manure for vegetable gardening and fish ingredients in fish farming.

Collecting around 200 trays of eggs per day, the Unit is the second largest egg supplier in the Central division. Its main clients include supermarkets and exporters such as Shop N Save supermarkets, Happiers Company Limited, World Harvest Supermarkets, Hot Bread Kitchen and Pacific Hai.

The Unit is hoping for more improvements in order to increase its capacity.

Seventeen inmates are deployed to work at the Unit on a daily basis.
