Pine Planting begins for FCS

Around 20 officers from the Fiji Corrections Service as well as 20 inmates have started with the replanting of pine trees at the Lololo Pine Station in Lautoka.
In speaking to the officers and inmates at the planting site, Commissioner of Corrections, Lt.Colonel Ifereimi Vasu said it was a continuation from the sugar-cane cutting programme held annually from June to December.
“This is one area in which we can rehabilitate our inmates. They need to know and understand that there are other avenues of earning decent living. So with the involvement of the officers, this is indeed the way forward in terms of rehabilitation for our inmates,” said Lt.Colonel Vasu.
“There was a request from Fiji Pine for the replanting programme, so we got together with senior officers and saw that there is indeed a greater need to assist in this worthy cause.”
“Of course, officers and inmates involved in this planting programme will be paid accordingly but we are looking at the long term benefits for the industry as a whole,” added Lt.Colonel Vasu.
“This is one way of the FCS giving back to our national economy as a whole,” said Lt.Colonel Vasu.
The pine planting programme will be on a three month trial basis and if all goes well with the current workforce, the FCS will be sending in more reinforcements to assist in the pine planting programme.
The target at the moment is to plant 700,000 pine seedlings on 600 hectares of land within the three months.
