In a significant development today, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) and the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) held a crucial meeting aimed at enhancing Transparency and Accountability within the FCS.
The primary objective of this meeting was to foster a more open relationship between these two key organizations and the public they serve. The meeting also provided an opportunity for both bodies to address pressing issues and collaborate on strategies to combat corruption within the corrections system.
The meeting was attended by key officials from both FICAC and FCS, including the Acting Deputy Commissioner of FICAC, Ms. Francis Puleiwai, and the Commissioner of Corrections, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa in which they both expressed their gratitude for finally coming together to address pressing issues that have been affecting the integrity of the corrections service. The willingness of both organizations to engage in dialogue and cooperation signifies a shared commitment to upholding ethical standards and ensuring that justice is served effectively.
In light of discussions between FICAC and FCS, both organizations have identified ways to support each other in combating bribery and corruption within corrections institutions.
These include enhanced training and awareness programs focusing on ethics, integrity, and anti-corruption measures to educate staff members, empower them to resist corrupt practices, establishing robust whistleblower protection mechanisms within FCS to encourage reporting of misconduct without fear of retaliation, and conducting regular audits and monitoring procedures to identify potential red flags or irregularities within the corrections system for prompt action against bribery or collusion.
By working together proactively, FICAC and FCS can strengthen their capacity to uphold transparency, accountability, and integrity within Fiji’s corrections institutions, ultimately fostering public trust in the justice system.
