Job Description: Medical Orderly – Fiji Corrections Service (FCS)
Position Title: Medical Orderly
Reports to: Supervisor and Officer in Charge
Indirect Reports: Correctional Officers, Allied Health Staff
Salary Bands: FCS32 [$25,503.00 – $44,736.00]
POSITION PURPOSE
The Medical Orderly at the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is responsible for attending to the inmates’ medical requests and grievances on daily basis. This includes ensuring the dietary scale of inmates, hygiene and sanitation of both inmates and officers.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist patients with mobility, such as helping them get in and out of beds or wheelchairs, and moving them to various areas within the facility
- Provide basic patient care under supervision, such as feeding, bathing and ensuring comfort
- Help patients with dressing, using the restroom, or grooming as needed
- Transport patients between different areas of the hospital or clinic
- Transfer patients between beds and stretches or wheelchairs safely
- Ensure that patients’ rooms, operating rooms, common arrears are clean, sanitized, and organized
- Maintain the cleanliness of health equipment’s
- Assists nurses and other health care professionals with preparing patients for procedures or surgeries
- Provide logistical support, such as delivering medical records, equipment’s, or medications within the facility
- Respond to calls for assistance from healthcare staff or nurse
- Ensure that patients are safe and comfortable by regularly checking on them and addressing their needs
- Help in monitoring patient conditions and reporting any concerns or unusual symptoms to nursing staff
- Provide assistance during emergency situations, such as helping evacuation or supporting emergency room staff.
- Counsel inmates on managing their health conditions and adopting healthier lifestyles.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Basic healthcare training program or certification
- Medical Orderly Course
- Basic First Aid Certification
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience as custodial duties and administrative duties or equivalent
- Consistently good report and ability to supervise and control personnel and inmates under his or her command
- Has attained competency in promotional course for the position
- Have experience in a related field such as caregiver and healthcare assistant

- Reduced incidents of health-related emergencies through effective management.
- Positive feedback from inmates regarding healthcare services.

- Effective coordination with healthcare teams and external medical providers.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The Medical Orderly will work within correctional facilities, assist healthcare professionals, and maintain an efficient, clean and safe environment. Flexible hours may be required, including weekend or emergency shifts.
