Background Information
Suva Prison was built between 1912 and 1913 and being the oldest prison institution in Fiji. It is situated along the Queens Highway at Walu Bay in the Central Division, province of Rewa. Suva Prison is the major receiving centre in Fiji and is an unclassified prison institution. The Central Classification and Allocation Board at Suva Prison allocate prisoners to the Classified Prisons at Maximum Security Prison, Medium Security Prison, Minimum Security Prison, Pre Release Centre and Nasinu Prison whenever a vacancy arises in any of those prisons.

Women prison was relocated to the current site from Suva prison in 1976 and is situated on the Queens Highway at Walu Bay in the Central Division. There has only been a Women Prison institution in Fiji and the second one is expected to open soon in Lautoka. Prisoner’s daily labour includes root crops/vegetable farming and upkeep of prison compound.
Since the Women Prison is a pilot prison for Education, Training and Rehabilitation Programs, it has been undertaking programs such as Alpha Programs, Numeracy and Literacy Programs, Flower Arrangement Training, Basic Sewing Training, Religious Programs, Counseling Programs, Weaving Training, and Start Your Own Business Courses.

Background Information
A new Female Remand Centre with Convict Centre was built in 2015 for a cost of $1.55million. Cope Construction built this between July and November of 2015. It will be brought into use as soon as the administration block and the internal and perimeter security fencing are completed.
The Female Remand Centre has a capacity of 24 remandees and the Convict Centre also caters for 24 inmates.
It will be manned by 25 Corrections personnel.
