In February this year, more than $500,000 in remittance was given to the Ministry of Economy by the Fiji Corrections Service.
The cheque of $509.223.81 was the generated output for 2018 from the Small Business Units of its Trade and Manufacturing Account (TMA).
The handing over of the TMA remittance cheque was officiated by the Deputy Commissioner of Correction SSUPT Apimeleki Taukei, ACCS Mrs Salesia Racaca, and SAO Mrs Helen Koi.
This was the fourth such return the FCS was making since the inception of the TMA in 2009.
The Ministry of Economy team was represented by Head of Budget, Mr Isoa Talemaibua, Treasury Manager, Mr Atin Chand and TMA rep Mr Jona Dalaga.
Mr Talemaibua thanked the FCS team and conveyed their appreciation in giving back a substantive amount to Government. He further thanked FCS for the previous year’s contributions and continuous commitment to the rehabilitation of those under our care.
In 2015, FCS returned $103,384.56 to Government and in 2016 the figures doubles to $358,160.23 despite the revised financial year from 12 to 6 months. For the 2016/2017 period the output tripled to $555,852.38.
The TMA business model is part of the rehabilitation set up at the FCS which teaches inmates new skills while at the same time also assists them through a small payment which they can take home when they complete their sentences.
The TMA has six small business units namely the Joinery, Tailor, Farms and Vegetables, Piggery, Poultry and Livestock.
