New infirmary and quarters for Lautoka

On January 18, 2019, the Commissioner of Corrections Commander Francis Kean opened a block of living quarters for wardens and an infirmary for inmates at the Natabua Corrections Center in Lautoka..

The two new facilities will ensure that the Fiji Corrections Services continues to uphold its mandate to positively restore lives says Commander Francis Kean.

The new facilities, namely an Infirmary ($258,000) and 1×6 Staff Quarters ($596,007.12) were both completed late last year.

Commander Francis Kean paid tribute to the Government of the day for always assisting with capital works so they may continue with their duty of rehabilitation and also care for its own officers.

“The staff quarters will accommodate officers and their families who live outside the institution boundary and will also boost security in the event of any emergency,’’ Commander Kean said.

“While the new infirmary will now ensure the FCS will be able to provide better medical services for convicted prisoners.”

Commander Kean also added that the new facility is also particularly important as the FCS strives to provide the proper care of its increasing elderly prisoner population.

“Secondly, the infirmary will mean we can now look after our inmates better, provide treatment when needed and also have a proper facility for our medical team to operate from.

Meanwhile, COC Edward Work and wife Joy were over the moon after being given the keys to their first home by Commander Kean.

COC Work said this was the first step in building his young family and also invest in his career as a Corrections officer.
