The Fiji Corrections Service have installed Skype Conferencing equipment in all Prisons to enable Inmates to contact their loved ones and lawyers.

This is part of measures put in place to adhere to the conditions imposed by the COVID -19 Pandemic and was made possible through donations by the International Committee of the Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) under the European Union.

Commissioner of Corrections Commander Francis Kean said this new initiative will allow inmates to be contact family members and also seek legal counsel without the need to travel and also without the risk of infection.

“We would like to acknowledge the ICRC and UNDP for making this possible with their support of IT equipment such as laptops and screens,’’ said Commander Kean.

“So we would like to let families know that we now have in place the equipment for them to stay in touch.”

“We know families have been restless in trying to contact their loves ones in our care and we thank them for their patience.

Commander Kean said such an initiative works best for everyone because it also means families can minimise on their cost of travelling and also be able to make contact no matter where they are.

Family members and lawyers may contact Officers in Charge of the various institutions to book sessions with their loved ones and clients.
