SIXTEEN inmates participated today in the 5th Fiji Corrections Service Yellow Ribbon Employment Expo at the Suva Civic Auditorium.
The 16 were within 12 months from their date of discharge and thus eligible for Employment Release.
They were also interviewed by invited potential employers from various sectors which included Hospitality Industry, Engineering, Carpentry and Joinery, Information Technology, Farming and Administration.
The Chief Guest at the event, Mr Nilesh Singh, Vodafone Fiji’s Head of Recharge and Distribution shared to those in attendance that when we provide former inmates with the tools, education, and opportunities to re-enter the workforce, we are then investing in their potential to become productive, tax-paying citizens.
“I know that prior to the Yellow Ribbon Project, many who have served time, at the end of their sentence often marked the beginning of a new struggle, limited opportunities and the challenge of re-integrating into society,’’ he said.
“But that has all changed for the better, and today’s Expo, excludes this cycle, a cycle which was more like an invisible shackle hampering the ability of former inmates to rebuild their lives but also preventing them from contributing to our communities and economy once again.
“Let us commit to breaking down the barriers that prevent former inmates from fully participating in our communities.”
In his vote of thanks, the Commissioner of Corrections Dr Jalesi Nakarawa said the marked success of FCS’ Public engagement events like the Yellow Ribbon Walk held in Labasa this year and today’s Expo, were largely due to the support of Government, religious denominations, the corporate sector, the Vanua, Communities and families over the years.
“We acknowledge the support of Government, religious denominations, the corporate sectors, the Vanua, communities and families, this is a task we cannot do alone,’’ Dr Nakarawa said.
“I am humbled and I acknowledge that a leading corporate entity in the country such as Vodafone Fiji Ltd, had accepted our invitation to be Chief Guest today. Vodafone Fiji has succesfully established its network all over the country and we know that they have much to offer the FCS in how we conduct our business.
Dr Nakarawa further stated that the event also signified the FCS attempts to reach beyond the confines of prison walls, and to push for the transition of ex-offenders back into society.
“I also take this time to thank all representatives from various sectors of the workforce who are willing to offer employment to the inmates based on their skills and qualifications today.
Dr Nakarawa also acknowledged the support of the Media in creating awareness and sharing the ideals of the Yellow Ribbon Project which has resulted in its reaching every household in the country.
