In partnership with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Corrections, six Corrections Officers completed a one week training from 24 – 29 Nov 24 at the NZCIS in Wellington.
The facility provides various training programmes for the Department of Corrections staff and international partners at the centre as part of its capacity building programme.
The Fiji Corrections benefited from the bilateral assistance offered by the NZ government to improve staff capabilities in tactical response techniques to better manage crisis situations at the prisons. The team also had the opportunity to visit the Rimutaka Prison to have an insight into the way prison operates the different facilities within the prison complex.
“This training provides the platform to build upon a comprehensive scoping and designing exercise in tactical response training”, said Mr Auta Moceisuva. Following this training, a Team from the NZ Department of Corrections training wing will travel to Fiji in February 25 to scope and design a comprehensive programme as well as support the local trainers who in turn will be required to train the staff on the same programme across the 15 correctional centres.
The training initiative intends to improve staff professionalism to be able to assess, plan and deal with crisis situation by applying minimum force to compel obedience and maintain discipline.
